One of the more popular menu options found in most Japanese restaurants is sushi. This also happens to be a food that people tend to either love or hate, however those that love it can be passionate about it. There are many different types of sushi and it can be served as both an appetizer and entrée. Some restaurants prepare it at an open counter and incorporate a performance style of preparation that can be exciting to watch. Whatever manner it arrives at the table it is always a hit with hungry sushi enthusiasts.

Sushi almost always begins with the stable ingredient of vinegar rice and then other items are added to it. Most often there is some form of raw fish involved and frequently the name of the sushi dish will be based on the fish that it contains. When raw fish is served alone, an not in a sushi roll, it is called sashimi and when it is added to clumps of hand rolled rice it is called nigirizushi. Almost always, sushi itself is rolled into sheets of seaweed after the fish and or other ingredients have been added to the rice. An alternative option for wrapping is algae, though most restaurants will serve it with seaweed.

Seaweed also has great health benefits, and unfortunately it is also one of those foods that people either love or hate. The entire sushi roll is packed with strong ingredients that can stand alone as extreme taste orientation and when combined in one roll, it is certainly a food that stands alone. Sushi has become so popular in Western countries that it is common for fine grocery stores and markets to carry packages of fresh sushi rolls in their isles. This is extremely common in Japan. The West has also generated its own take on traditional sushi, and the California Roll is popular across the United States.
