Odd Things to do and see in New York

New york is a very strange city. It revels in its uniqueness and has a reputation for flaunting what others might find obscene. Tourists to this city are encouraged to indulge their senses from eating world cuisine to rubbing statues for luck. There are even a variety of New York restaurants and night clubs that if they didn’t exist before being featured in the movies or on television they suddenly cropped into being soon after. Some of the oddest things you’ll find in New York though are the types of museums though it has its fair share of odd bars and restaurants to be sure.

If you like viewing the rare, weird, and unlikely the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square Odditorium opened in 2007 featuring a ribbon cutting ceremony where the ribbon, composed of shrunken heads, was cut by a sword swallower. The Odditorium is the home of a gallery of 24 real shrunken heads, a section of the Berlin wall, a 3,197 lb meteorite, and even Bebe Ruth’s New York team baseball uniform which is a New York treasure. If you want to get a picture with your favorite celebrity but know you would die of embarrassment over suddenly becoming a gushing fan you should pay a visit to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum . This museum doesn’t keep it’s displays behind glass or ropes so you can take pictures of you conversing with any number of stars to show your friends or starring terrified with your favorite movie monster looming behind you, whether you tell them the true story behind your snapshots is up to you. After all that excitement why not continue the theme of oddities by visiting the Jekyll and Hyde Club for dinner? The fare is about standard but you’re going to the atmosphere which is slightly spooky and bordering on the absurd and a lot like going to a well done haunted house for dinner.

This just goes to show that you can find family entertainment for even the most unique tastes scattered through the city. If you’re staying in New York you might even set a day aside to visit landmarks from movies and shows set in this marvelous city. The firehouse from Ghostbusters is located at 14 N. Moore St and is the working fire house of Hook and Ladder 8. Maybe, if your a fan of the second Gremlins movie, check out the Clamp Center or St. Patrick’s Cathedral at 460 Madison Ave where scenes from this film were shot. Be sure to look up if one of the many hotels to choose from throughout New York is in one of these movies or has an odd history to incorporate into your visit.
